We have been asked by Mr. Eber Pollard of Wellington Ont. (Prince Edward County), to sell the contents of his and his late wife Ruthís residence. Situated at 215 Main St. in the village, it is loaded with a collection of Canadiana put together over the last 50 plus years. The Pollards, from the beginning of their collecting, favoured figured maple and cherry furnishings and as they traveled across both Ontario and Quebec, selectively added to their collection. In all, there are over 35 pieces of either figured maple furniture, cherry furnishings or cherry with maple highlights. The Pollards spent many years in Guelph Ont. where they were actively involved in the Historical Society. Here Eber started what has become a interesting Canadiana library with not only items of interest to Guelph and area but examples from across Canada.


Featured in this sale are over 35 pieces of figured maple, cherry and cherry with figured maple highlights furniture starting with chairs and progressing to blanket chests, wash stands, chests of drawers, a flat to the wall cupboard in cherry with figured maple drawers, a sideboard in walnut and figured maple from Brighton Ont., an outstanding wood box with a carved decoration from Elmira Ont., textiles to include quilts, coverlets, hooked mats, a hooked runner, an I. Twiss grandfather clock in the original grained finish, OG weight clocks, cottage clocks, etc., three samplers, two of which relate to Guelph including one dated 1859 by Louisa Boult and one from the Holcomb family, a crucifix from a Catholic church near Welsley Ont., a drop leaf candle table with Acanthus leaves carved on the legs (found in Picton Ont.), several single drawer candle tables in cherry and figured maple, a refinished butternut country couch, foot stools in both figured maple and butternut, figured maple chests of drawers and cherry chests of drawers, a cherry blanket chest, cherry rope bed, wash stands in both cherry and figured maple including an outstanding example in cherry from Picton with a dovetailed gallery and three drawers across the front, a fold-over tea table in mahogany with string inlay on the tapered legs from a prominent home in Brockville, two cast iron hanging lamps, a brass framed hanging lamp with a painted shade, hanging lamp parts, bracket lamps and bracket lamp parts, pedestal coal oil lamps in both clear and colour with examples in Bullseye and Princess Feather, three coloured lamps including amber and vaseline, figured maple side chairs in both pairs and singles, a set of refinished fan back Ontario Windsors, a set of four walnut gun stock chairs,several Staffordshire figurines and spill holders, a large number of Bartlett prints, many other prints including Currier and Ives most in period or birds eye maple frames, a quantity of oil paintings dating from the latter part of the 19th century to the 1950ís, a blue and white pitcher and bowl and other toilet set pieces including a collection of pot lids, a large number of picture frames from the 1860-70ís, antique hardware, a small quantity of figured maple rough sawn boards, a walnut tilt top birdcage candle table from south western Ontario, a later figured maple candle table, an HB&L 5 gal. churn with a bird decoration, wood curtain rods, sad irons, a collection of kitchen utensils including some wrought iron examples for fireplace, trivets, a cast iron stove pipe shelf, cast iron boot jack, a reverse on glass mirror with tinsel decoration and a tiger maple frame, other early mirrors, two candle lanterns, vintage sewing supplies, a selection of hard cover books relating to Canadian history and politics dating from the 19th century, a selection of antique reference books covering most Canadian fields. In addition to this we will offer regular household goods, appliances, roto tiller, etc.


This is a large auction of quality antiques in a collection that hasnít been picked over by family members or outside institutions. Plan to attend as early as possible to view the collection.
