I have been asked by Alistair Smith of Hudson Quebec who has decided to begin the process of down sizing his significant collection of Quebec Folk Art together with a smattering of important Quebec furnishings and Elizabeth Bos of Kingston who is moving to a much smaller home, to sell parts of their collections by unreserved public auction.
The folk art, highlighted by the fabulous miniature circus of Gaston Bergeron of Laval, Quebec, carved over a period of 30 years and displayed in various parts of North America by the artist, plus examples of folk art by mainly Quebec and east coast carvers and painters to include Art Gallant, H.T.Snow, Paul Lachapelle, M.Lagace, Heldore Bisonnette, P. Nelphas Prevost, Blanche Bolduc to name a few, who have carved and painted their way through over one hundred lots of quality folk art sculptures, wall plaques, oil paintings, etc.
The antiques to be offered are equally as exciting as the folk art with furnishings from Quebec, Ontario and the US to include the high post canopy bed shown on the front cover of “The Early Furniture of FRENCH CANADA” by Jean Palardy, a refinished but great early 19th century Quebec pine armoire decorated with the St. Andrews cross and an unusual carved crown molding, a flat to the wall two piece cupboard from the Kingston area in an old brown over paint, a small tapered leg harvest table from the Riley homestead near Richmond Ont., Lanark County in it’s original finish, a one drawer Doukhobor table from Saskatchewan in its original finish, a small built in cupboard from Lennox and Addington county, a late 18th/early 19th century fold up Press bed in painted pine with rope spring in an old white over paint, a great selection of early 19th century fireplace iron to include wrought iron andirons, spatulas, two and three tine forks, iron, steel and brass ladles, toasters, trivets, cranes, etc., late 18th/early 19th century early wrought iron H L and strap hinges, a Kingston Upper Canada sampler dated 1823, a rare New England crewelwork on linen bedcover lined with silk dating from the late 18th century wonderful early decorated tole ware to include a domed top deed box, a small covered container, tray, etc., an important carved rooster weather vane from Stellarton, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, one of three known examples by John Oliver C1870 (ex Price Collection), an early 19th century tall case pine grandfather clock found in northern New York state with its original figured maple grain painted finish, a tall case grandfather clock by Twiss in its original grain painted finish, clock shelves, a refinished blanket chest, a collection of several fireplace bellows with painted and stencilled side panels, games boards, a rare and desirable hand woven Tyler coverlet from upper New York state in red and white, signed “Achsah.
